Backlog 2025 April - Game 6: A VanillaWare Title With a Fantastic Artstyle

Dragon's Crown Pro - PlayStation 4

Retired April 26th

Ever since I first played Muramasa on the Nintendo Wii I have wanted to play other similar games created by Vanillaware.

Two games I heard about were Dragon's Crown Pro and Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir, both PlayStation 4 remasters of PlayStation 2 games.

I really enjoyed the 2D hand painted art style and the satisfying combat of Muramasa, so after many years of wanting to play them I finally started one of them, Dragon's Crown Pro.

Disappointingly, I was not enjoying my time with the game as much as I thought I would so I decided to retire the game.

While the fighting felt okay I did just not like the way the game was structured and paced. It seemed that you had to go on a number of byte sized adventures (or quests) and then have to report back to others in the same areas over and over again - it just felt too repetitive and felt more like a chore than fun.

The combat as well did not feel as good as the other Vanillaware game I played, Muramasa. The combat was passable, not terrible, but it was not enough to keep me hooked.

Muramasa Gameplay

I have heard others say Dragon's Crown plays like an old Arcade 2D beat em up, and side scrolling beat em ups is one of my favourite genres, so in theory I should love Dragon's Crown Pro - but I did just not enjoy my time with the game.

Since retiring Dragon's Crown I have began to play another Vanillaware game in my backlog and that is Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir.

I am happy to report that I am enjoying Odin Sphere much more than Dragon's Crown Pro. Odin Sphere feels a lot more like Muramasa - its levels are more open and fun to explore, combat feels much better and the story is more interesting.

Odin Sphere Early Boss Battle

According to How Long to Beat Odin Sphere is double the length of Dragon's Crown so I do not anticipate to be finished with the game until May. As I write this it is the 27th of April and there are only three days left in the month. Theoretically, I could finish the game in three days if I play for around 12 hours a day, but I cannot enjoy a game that way - maybe three hours in each evening would be more accurate.
