Trine 5 - PlayStation 5
Not Quite Completed Yet, But Not Retired Either!
Well, after playing both Trine 3 and 4 at the end of 2024 I discovered that Trine 5 had been released in 2023. I normally wait a while before buying games and right at the moment I am concentrating on playing through my backlog before I make any new purchases, but I saw a physical copy of Trine 5 for a good price and decided to purchase it back in October when Trine 3 and 4 were fresh in my memory. Around 7 months after I bought Trine 5 and it became the next priority in my backlog.
This is the first time I have played a Trine game on the PlayStation platform - I originally played the first and second games on the PC and Trine 3 and 4 were attempted on the Xbox One.
Trine 5 has that typical Trine charm that the previous titles had. Like the previous games in the franchise the story does have a kid like feel to it, but it is just fun to solve the physics based platforming puzzles in the magical settings that the game offers - the Trine games to me have a comfort food type of feeling.
Compared to the previous Trine games, Trine 5 has a slight more focus on combat. The Trine games in the past have been very physic puzzle and platform focussed with some combat to help mix things up.
I do not hate the combat of Trine 5, nor do I love it - the combat this time around does feel a little out of place with the traditional three Trine characters. There is more projectile weaponry that you have to deal with compared to previous Trine games and I feel that the characters are not really designed to deal with this sort of combat (it feels a little shoehorned in).
I have been enjoying my time with Trine 5, but there is just something not quite clicking with the me. I am finding that I enjoy the game more when I play it in byte sized chunks rather than spending 2 or 3 hours on it which would be the usual way I would play a game. Maybe as I played Trine 3 and 4 at the end of last year I have started Trine 5 too soon after and need to wait a while or maybe at the moment I am just not in the right mood for a puzzle type game.
There are other games in my backlog that I would prefer to concentrate on at the moment so I have decided that Trine 5 will act as a palate cleanser when playing other games in my backlog.
The plan is to keep playing games in my backlog but after completing a game I intend to play a level of Trine 5 before starting the next game in my backlog. I am still excited to experience more of the Trine adventure, but I think I will play it in byte sized (snacks, if you will) as a side dish to the main course of my backlog.
