Alice Asylum: What Could Have Been an Incredible Third Game in American McGee's Wonderland Series

In a previous February backlog I wrote a little on my experiences with both American McGee's Alice and the sequel Alice Madness Returns. I also mentioned that the creator and a small team worked on a design document for the concept of a third game (entitled Alice Asylum) in the series, which they used as a pitch to be shown towards the rights holders (EA). Sadly, the rights holders decided not to green light the game.

I have read the document and it feels like it is more than a design concept - it basically has the full story (illustrated with beautiful artwork in the vein of Alice Madness Returns) laid out chapter by chapter and looks quite impressive.

It is a shame that Alice Asylum never got greenlit as it seemed to have the same incredible art and great ideas that were so much fun to interact with in Alice Madness Returns. But at the very least the game document that was created for a third game is extremely throughout and a joy to read, thus in many ways fans have some sort of method to enjoy the third game in the series.

The game may not have been created, but the Alice Asylum document is a through piece of art that can be enjoyed by fans of the series. You can tell by reading the document that a lot of love and passion was put into the creation of Alice Asylum.

If the game is never created with American McGee and his team, then I am still grateful that they worked so hard on the Alice Asylum document as I view it as a genuine way to enjoy the third Alice outing.

I originally thought I would read through Alice Asylum in March and mention it in my March games backlog, but because it was never turned into a game I am not able to write my usual dealings with the interactive element, so I thought I would mention it in a separate post.

Below, I have included some pictures from the document highlighting parts on the prelude and chapter 1. (Click and each picture for a bigger version).

The Alice Asylum Game document can be downloaded in full from here along with information from the creator as to why it was created.
