Backlog 2026 - January: Obscure, Alone in the Dark and Splinter Cell

 Obscure 2 - Steam

Retired 23rd January 2026

While I enjoyed the first Obscure game I just cannot enjoy its sequel. It had its moments, but it just feels quite inferior to the very first Obscure. I tried it for a few chapters, but I just felt I was wasting my time, so with disappointment I decided to retire the game.

Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare - PS2

Retired 24th January 2026

I just have not had much luck with the Alone in the Dark series - I have tried the first one through GOG on the PC, I have played some of the atrocious PS3 Alone in the Dark Inferno and now I have attempted the PS2 Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare.

Out of three Alone in the Dark games I thought New Nightmare would finally be an Alone in the Dark that I would enjoy, but I was very wrong. The first Alone in the Dark is the most difficult to get into as I think the game has aged very poorly and the character movements are so painfully slow (and this is coming from someone that enjoys tank controls from the old RE and Tomb Raider games). The PS3 game is different from the original eventhough they share the same name and it is just very broken.

On paper The New Nightmare should be ideal for someone like me that has played capcom's old fixed camera RE games and similar style games, but I think my main issue is when moving the character along an environment each time the fixed camera perspective changes it feels like the game freezes for a good amount of time before changing angle and during some moments it is bearable, but during combat or when I want to quickly run away from enemies it can be an annoyance and takes me completely out of the experience.

I had previously tried this game and thought that maybe I had been a little harsh, but after having given it another chance I feel that I made the right choice to stop. I am interested in the newest Alone in the Dark on the PlayStation 5 - maybe that will be the Alone in the Dark game that I finally enjoy - you know what they say, fourth time lucky!

Splinter Cell: Double Agent - PS2

Completed 31st  January 2026

I am a big fan of the original PS2 era Splinter Cell trilogy. When Splinter Cell: Double Agent first released it came out on the next generation of platforms (e.g. the PlayStation 3). I remember trying the game and felt disappointment compared to the previous games that were released and I never kept the PlayStation 3 version.

Many years later I learned in a YouTube video that Double Agent was also released a little later on the previous generation of consoles (e.g. PlayStation 2). The game being released on the PS2 is not the interesting part, but in the YouTube video I learned that many would actually detail the PS2 version as the ultimate edition - this is because this version has some extra levels and additional story information that the next generation version does not.

I previously played a little of the PS2 version, but did not give it much of a chance - I wanted to give it one final go and see if I like it enough to complete it.

I enjoyed my time with the PS2 version of this game, although that hacking mini game was a little annoying at times.
