Recently, I looked through my physical collection of games and looked to see if there were any games I started but never finished. To my surprise I found around 50 physical games that I started but gave up on. I decided to go through these sample play each of the games and come to the decision whether I wanted to play through each game from start to finish or whether to just sell them. Around 18 of those 50 games I decided give them ago and attempt to playthrough them - and with that my physical backlog went from 0 to 18 just like that!
The physical games I have added to my backlog are:
Yakuza - PS2
The one that started it all. I have had the first Yakuza game in my PlayStation 2 for many years, but have never completed the original game. My first Yakuza game I played was the third entry on the PlayStation 3 and after a slow start I feel in love with the Yakuza games. The first and second games were remade for the PlayStation 4, so technically I have completed the first game in the series.
Despite having played the remake I wanted to experience the original version of the story but I stopped playing the original PS2 version because of the English dub. Ever since the second Yakuza the Japanese voices have been made available to play with English text, and to me, that is the only way to play the games.
Thankfully, a fan translation patch with the originally Japanese voice actors has been released and now I can finally play the way I have always wanted to.
Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands - PSP
I actually played through this game a few years ago and stopped around the half way point - I want to go back to it and give it another chance.
Very confusingly Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands was released on many consoles but despite sharing the same name many of them play differently and are also completely different stories! The PS3 and Xbox versions are the same, but the Wii, DS and PSP all have different stories and the only reason I know this is thanks to people that have covered it in different YouTube videos. So far I have played the PS3 and Wii versions and I would also like to play through the PSP version.
Dino Crisis - PS1
I am a big fan of the classic PS1 Capcom developed RE games but I had never played bought Dino Crisis when it originally released despite the similarities to the RE series. I played it many years ago but never played very far - I hope to change that soon.
King Kong - PS2
I bought the King Kong game based on the movie on a whim when I was in a Retro Game store many years ago as I always heard good things about the game. The story behind the making of the game is that Peter Jackson was impressed by the PlayStation 2 classic Beyond Good and Evil and he wanted the creator of Beyond Good and Evil to make a game based on Jackson's movie.
When I bought the game I played it for a while, but just kind of stopped. I want to try the game one more time and see if I end up enjoying it.
Alone in the Dark - PS2
Yet another PlayStation 2 game I started for a while but just stopped playing. I think a few years ago I would have considered myself more of a collector of PlayStation 2 games and as a result I way buying more games than I could play.
I have the very first Alone in the Dark on GOG and do not think it has aged well and I played the Alone in the Dark that was released on the PlayStation 3 and that was pretty bad. The PlayStation 2 Alone in the Dark seems a lot better and I would like to try it again.
Velocity 2X - PS4
I played this game many years ago and remember enjoying it and then I reached around the half way point and was stuck in the game and other things were happening in real life so I just kind of forgot about the game.
I recently sampled it again and continued on the level I was stuck on - it took me a few tries but I managed to pass the level I left the game at all those years ago. I then played a couple of the next levels and enjoyed my time. This is a game I am excited to go back to soon.
Ghost Trick - PS4
Ghost Trick is a re-release of an old puzzle game that was released on the original Nintendo DS console and later saw a release on the iOS store. I remember playing a demo of the game a few years ago and enjoyed my time with the game, but I never did buy that version of the game.
Many years later it was released on the PS4, but at the time of writing no physical version was released in the UK. A physical version was released in Asian markets and I bought the Korean version whilst visiting Play Asia as it was on sale and cheap at the time.
I have played the first mission of the game and enjoyed it, but I put the game to the side as I thought I would play a few missions at a time inbetween other games. I want to go back to the game soon and maybe I will still use the strategy of playing a few missions between other bigger games.
Infamous 1 - PS3
I always heard good things about the two Infamous games on the PlayStation 3, but did not play any games in the franchise until the PlayStation 4 release of Infamous Second Son and its stand alone expansion pack First Light.
I bought the first two games on the PlayStation 3 for a cheap price and fired both games up and I enjoyed my time with both but just never committed to playing much.
Infamous 2 - PS3
What I thought for Infamous 2 is the same as the first Infamous.
Fable Anniversary - Xbox 360
See below under Fable 2.
Fable 2 - Xbox 360
I tried both Fable games for around 30 minutes each and felt that they were promising titles - but I just never returned to them.
If I enjoy Fable I and II, then there is also a third game to buy.
The Operative: No One Lives Forever - PS2
A James Bond parody game that I was enjoying but just stopped playing.
Jak and Daxter - PS2
I am not usually a fan of the cartoon era 3D platforms but there is just something I like about the first Jak and Daxter game from the little I have played of it - I just wish to give it more time.
Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines - PSP
I am a big fan of the old style Assassin's Creed games and this PSP game is a follow up/spin off to the first Assassin's Creed title
Splinter Cell: Double Agent - PS2
I was a big fan of the first three Splinter Cell games on the PS2 and then they released Double Agent on the PlayStation 3. Double Agent on PS3 ended up as a disappointment, but I never realised that the PS2 version was released a little later and it has added more to the story the is not in the next gen versions - it is for this reason that I want to give the game a proper chance.
GTA: Vice City - PS2
I am not going to pretend that I am a huge fan of the GTA games. I have played IV and V and enjoyed them and I remember seeing the PS2 trilogy for around 25 to 50 pence each so I thought I would try them. I played them for a little, but never returned to them.
When I recently sampled them again I thought that they felt good enough that I would like to play them from start to finish.
GTA: San Andreas - PS2
See above.
GTA III - PS2
GTA III, despite coming out before Vice City and San Andreas I think GTA III will be the last one I play in the trilogy. I have decided this because GTA III seemed less interesting than Vice City and San Andreas, at least from a directing viewpoint. GTA III felt like you are just going to a person and listening to orders and then carrying out the mission whilst the other two games felt like there was more character and world building which just felt more interesting.
The Simpsons: Hit and Run - PS2
Many Simpsons games in the PlayStation 2 era are known for how terrible they are (The Simpsons Skateboarding and wrestling games), but The Simpsons Hit and Run is regarded as a good game. I have played the game a little and it seemed interesting - a GTA suitable for kids.
The Warriors - PS2
Based on a cult classic movie from the creators of GTA. This game had a lot of love back in the day and it is a game I have played a little of and I like what I played but for some reason I just never went back to it.
Canis Canem Edit (Bully) - PS2
According to my save file I played this game in 2014 and reached chapter 4 and stopped. I remember I enjoyed the game, but then for some reason I encountered a glitch where I reached a certain save point and when I left the building with the save point the world did not load properly. I could continue running around but I was lost as the glitch was so bad that I could no longer play the game.
I remember buying another used copy for cheap in case there was something wrong with the disc, but I remember encountering the problem again with the new disc so I stopped playing, which was disappointing as I had reached chapter 4 out of 6.
I recently loaded up the game and the glitch never happened this time - maybe I was using a different PlayStation 2 at the time. I would like to go back and complete it one day.
Shadow of Rome - PS2
I very nearly put this game in my selling pile, but I feel that I have not given it enough of a chance. I only played a little of it and it does have a strange structure to it.
You play as two different characters - a Roman solider that fights in the coliseum and the nephew of Julius Cesar that is stealth focused.
Apparently, this game was the basis for the Dead Rising games.
Well, that is the end of physical games.
BUT it does not quite end like that as I remembered there were some PS1 games I bought digitally on my PS3 system that I only played for a little and so I thought why not add them to the backlog and give them a proper chance. There are only 3 games and they are:
Fear Effect - PS3 (PS1 classic)
Only played this game for a little and never really played long enough to determine whether I enjoyed the game or not.
The recent PS5 release of the game reminded me that I need to go back to the game and decide whether I like it or not.
Crash Bandicoot - PS3 (PS1 classic)
Again, this is another game I bought and played for a few levels and never returned to.
Abe's Odyssey - PS3 (PS1 classic)
Abe's Oddysee I remember playing a demo of on the original PlayStation 1 console and during the PlayStation 3 days I decided purchase the digital version on the PS3. I only played a little of the PS3 digital version and I really need to go back to it.
I also have some some other digital games I started a little but never gave them much of a chance and they are:
Siren - PS4 (PS2 classic)
A PlayStation 2 game that I purchased digitally on the PlayStation 4. I bought the physical version of the second game on the PlayStation 2 and while the game was not amazing I did enjoy it enough.
I have since played the remake/reimaging version on the PlayStation 3 but bought the original on the PlayStation 4 digitally. For many years I thought about buying the physical game on the PS2 but the lack of Japanese voice acting in the first game put me off buying it as it had rather hammy UK English voice acting and the physical game was rather pricey.
AND!!! There a few games I realised I have in my Steam library where I started but never gave much of a chance. Most of the titles below were included in Humble Bundles and were never the main attraction of why I bought the bundles so some games I tried for a little but never gave much time. So, I thought I would give the following games in my Steam library a good chance.
The eye of Isis - Steam
Play Time on Record - 1 minute
This game was another one of those games I heard about on a hidden gems for the PlayStation 2 type of video and I saw it for cheap on Steam so I thought I would give it a try.
Apparently, I have only tried it for 1 minute according to Steam - I think I played it for that little time and immediately thought that it was just not for me. I would like to give the game some more time before I make the decision whether I want to keep playing or not.
Broken Age - Steam
Play Time on Record - 5.7 hours
I remember I played the first half of the game before the second half of the game was released. By the time the second half was released I had forgot the story of the game. I always was meant to return to it, but I never did. Maybe I should watch a story recap online and then return to the second half.
D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die - Steam
Play Time on Record - 33 minutes
From the creator of Deadly Premonition SWEARY. I just never gave this game enough time - I want to revisit it and give it a better chance.
Jazzpunk - Director's Cut- Steam
Play Time on Record - 33 minutes
I started the game and was stuck quite quickly and never returned to it. So, I do not really know if I liked or disliked the experience.
Grim Fandango Remastered - Steam
Play Time on Record - 40 minutes
Grim Fandango is a game I remember watching someone play when I was in school and many years later a remastered version was released. Probably due to time I only played 40 minutes of it and never returned to it.
Joe Danger 2 - Steam
Play Time on Record - 29 minutes
An interesting game from the studio that would later create the popular No Man's Sky.
Soul Suspect - Steam
Play Time on Record - 2.4 hours
A different sort of game that interested me - you have to solve your own murder from beyond. I just stopped playing it after a while.
Spec Ops: The Line - Steam
Play Time on Record - 88 minutes
I know the twist of the game, but I would like to return to it. Military shooters are not normally my type of game, but despite knowing the ending I think I should give the game another go.
The Dream Machine - Steam
Play Time on Record - 6.2 hours
My time with the Dream Machine is a little frustrating because I enjoyed the game a lot, but it was released in chapters and they took a while to come out. I think it took so long because the characters were filmed in a clay animation style and the game was in complete when I started it.
I think I reached chapter 3 and the next chapter took so long to come out I had forgotten what happened in the story and I just never returned to the game. I probably should have waited a few years until the game was finished and fully released. I will likely watch a recap of the story and continue my progress.
Welcome to the Dreamscape - Steam
Play Time on Record - 0 minutes
I think the may have been added to my Steam library because it was free - well that is another game that has been added to my backlog.
Wallace and Gromit Grand Adventures - Steam
Play Time on Record - 108 minutes
I enjoyed watching Wallace and Gromit when I was younger and I remember this game was included in one of the bundles I purchased. It looks interesting enough to at least give it a chance.
Finally, there is one more digital game I bought many years ago but never played for too long.
The Legend of Zelda - A Link to the Past - Wii (SNES Virtual Console)
Many would regard this game as a classic, but I have never played it for long despite buying it on the Virtual Console on the Nintendo Wii. I think it is about time I actually play through the game.
Considering that on average I complete around 30 games per year (25 in last year) I wonder is there any point to buying games in the year 2026 as I now have nearly 40 games in my backlog without spending any extra money!
Will I ever complete all those games that have suddenly manifested in my backlog? Only time will tell.
