Backlog March 2026 - Part 1: Resident Evil Requiem

Resident Evil: Requiem - PS5

Completed 8th March 2026

Playing the 9th mainline entry in the series feels quite strange yet it is a very enjoyable game. RE 9 is essentially split into two halves where you play as two different characters and their stories both intertwine.

In the first half of the game you play as a new character called Grace. Her gameplay feels very much like the 7th entry which went back to the survival horror roots that the franchise was founded on, but unlike RE 7 which was solely in first person, this time you have the option to play in either 3rd or 1st person. The game recommends to play Grace's story in first person, so that is how I played the game.

Overall I really enjoyed playing the campaign of Grace as I do prefer the survival aspect over the more action orientated games in the RE series.

The second half of the story is focussed on long-time RE character Leon Kennedy. Leon's story is recommended to be played in 3rd person and, whereas Grace's story resembles RE 7, his story feels very much like the more action orientated RE 4 Remake.

It really feels like RE 9 is two games in one - it is like the developer's are trying to please those that love the old survival horror style and the fans that love the more action orientated RE games.

Overall Leon's campaign was fun, but not as good as Grace's campaign as I just prefer the survival aspect over the more action orientated version.

Another nice aspect is that you can play either 1st person or 3rd person for either character - after completing the game I went through some of my previous saves and played some Grace parts with the 3rd person camera and some parts of Leon's section in a 1st person perspective - it shook things up and makes possible replays more interesting.

If I were to grade each section individually I would give Grace's section a 9 out of 10 and Leon's section a 7.5 out of 10. While I did enjoy Leon's section I would not have complained if the whole game played in the style of Grace's section - but I realise that Capcom were trying to appease both the survival horror fans and the action horror fans.

Score 8.5/10
