Favourite games played in 2024
Some brief thoughts on what were my favourite 'Battling the Backlog' games I played in 2024.
The Callisto Protocol
Surprised how much I enjoyed it after the lukewarm reviews. From the creator's of Dead Space the Callisto Protocol plays similar and also has emphasis on melee combat. Very under rated game, which I enjoyed much more than mainstream review sites lead me to believe.
Tormented Souls
Amazing survival horror that feels like playing the Resident Evil 1 remake with a pinch of Silent Hill added for good measure.
Tomb Raider I - III Remastered
A lovingly put together faithful remaster with enhanced graphics with the option to switch to the original graphics at any time during gameplay. Had a wonderful time slowly playing the collection of the first three games and their expansion packs over the year. Did not rush play this as I came back to it often and played it in byte sized chunks - I wanted to savour the experience for as long as I could.
To me it is the most fun I have had with an official Tomb Raider game since The Last Revelation was released on the original PlayStation 1 console. It was great that they also included the expansion packs that were originally only released on the PC - now the console audience has the opportunity to experience the wonderful extra levels for the first three Tomb Raider titles.
Happily a sequel has been announced, Tomb Raider 4 - 6 Remastered. I am beyond excited to play these games in remastered form - especially Tomb Raider 4, which along with the first and second Tomb Raider, is one of my favourite Tomb Raider games from the original creators. The team that worked on the Tomb Raider remasters, also worked on the recently released Soul Reaver remastered collection that I am excited to play.
Little Nightmares II
I loved playing the first Little Nightmares game and thought that it acted well as a one off experience. When I eventually played the sequel it was just as strange and fun to play as the original.
Lollipop Chainsaw
I wanted to play this game for many years and finally before the prices went sky high I took a chance and decided to play the Xbox 360 version in 2024. It is a quirky, short but fun silly zombie hack en slash type of videogame. It took me back to a time of watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer on the TV as it did feel like it took inspiration from the show but upped the crudeness and humour.
Lollipop Chainsaw saw a remastered version released entitled REPOP, although a number of music tracks have been replaced due to licencing issues - I wonder how this will impacted the price for the X360 and PlayStation 3 versions?
Darksiders III
Originally I did not buy Darksiders III as it was described to be heavily inspired by Dark Souls games which I am not a huge fan off. I decided to give it a go as I loved Darksiders I and II when they released but I was put off by the Dark Souls inspiration. I am glad I finally played it as it can still feel like I and II with hack en slash as being an optional selection.
If anything Darksiders III reminded me of the very first Darksiders game that was heavily inspired the Ocarina of Time era of Zelda games. I loved exploring the Zelda like dungeons and using the different abilities that you gain to solve environmental puzzles.
Deus Ex Mankind Divided
I was put off with initial reviews and wish had played it when it first was released. I really enjoyed my time with this playing as stealthily as I could.
Judgment
I have been a huge fan of the Yakuza games and I was a little sceptical about playing a spinoff title that did not star Kazama Kiuri, but I was pleasantly surprised by Judgment.
Liked new character/interesting backstory.
Kept the same cool beat em up combat of previous Yakuza games with some improvements.
Has the usual compelling twists and turns of a Yakuza game.
Yakuza 7
I was quite sceptical with Yakuza 7. The story of Kazuma Kiryu had ended with Yakuza 6 and now Yakuza 7 had a new protagonist and the combat was no longer focussed on cool over the top kung-fu fighting, but was more like a traditional turn based RPG combat.
With the odd exception I do not really enjoy RPGs or turn based combat, but it seems that Yakuza 7 is part of that odd exception. The turn based combat, to me, was entertaining and somehow they it still managed to have that bonkers over the top feel that previous Yakuza games had with the original combat.
